Statistics update

It’s the end of the month, so time to update the statistics (). Except for electricity al values are normal for the time of the year. The natural gas consumption is already on the rise with 49 m³, the heating system has been running for some time now. Electricity is quite high with 112 kWh. For the most part this because I charged the Tazzari Zero () twice last weekend, which used up 23 kWh. Our solar panels produced 73,2 kWh, so for the first time since March our meter reading has risen somewhat. Our drinking water consumption was average with 4,5 m³.

The Plugwise measuring system allows me to separately measure the consumption of some devices:

  • Charging the Tazzari Zero twice: 23,2 kWh or 20,1%
  • Refrigerator: 16,43 kWh or 14,6%
  • Contral heating system: 12,36 kWh or 11,0%
  • Washing machine: 10,92 kWh or 9,7%
  • Our two laptops: 7,00 kWh or 6,2%
  • ADSL-router/NAS: 4,03 kWh or 3,6%
  • Microwave/convection oven: 1,39 kWh or 1,2%
  • Rest (lighting, large oven, television, sandwich-toaster, Living Colours LED-lamps, Plugwise-plugs, etc.): 33,6%

For some one who likes measuring, numbers and graphs, like me, these things are cool :)

Exhibition “Living from the wind”

To October 31st, 2010 there is a free exhibition in the Amsterdam Zuiderkerk () called “Leven van de wind” () (lit. “living from the wind”, but I’m not quite sure if that translates well…), about wind energy in Amsterdam in the past, present and future.

I’ll go there on Saturday, October 30th. The exhibition is open that day from 12:00 to 16:00. Who knows, I might run into one or more acquaintances.

This websites’ fifth anniversary is coming up

This is how it started...

On June, 20th, 2006 I published my first post at the simple weblog SolarWebsite, which didn’t even have its own domain name then. There are three posts from before June 20th but I backdated those, that’s how I did things back then. :)

But all this does mean that this website has its fifth anniversary on June 20th, 2011. That’s still some time into the future but I’m already considering what I’ll do. These are the options I’ve considered so far:

  • Change the layout? I don’t see any reason for that because I think it’s readable and clear, but the layout is nearly a year and half old and it’s starting to itch.
  • A party? In the five years I’ve been running this website I’ve met many dozens, maybe hundreds of interesting people, from different backgrounds and each with his or her own outlook on sustainability. Maybe I should invite them all and throw a big party. That in itself could be very interesting but I want ‘more’ but I don’t know what yet. Maybe I’ll invite a few interesting speakers.
  • A contest? I have nothing to give away, but maybe I can arrange something with one the sponsors of this website.

In any case, I don’t want to let it go pas unnoticed, and I’ll keep thinking about it in the coming months. If you have a nice idea, please let me know in the comments below.

General assembly ODE was interesting

Organisatie voor Duurzame Energie

As I described a few days ago, Saturday, October 23rd, the fall excursion and general assembly of the Organisatie voor Duurzame Energie (Organisation for Sustainable Energy ) () were held. It was a fun and interesting day. The day began early in the morning with finding a fully charged Tazzari Zero in front of our house (I’ll write an extensive article about my experiences with this electric car later). I drove the Zero to Bussum, to the beautiful sustainable office building near the water tower. When I arrived there I parked in the parking garage under the building, which even had a charging point (normal outdoor wall socket). Although the battery was still nearly full I plugged it in anyway, much to the delight of the people from the office building. Apparently this was the first electric car ever to charge there :)

The general assembly was nice, there were some changes in the board and we had to vote about that. After the general assembly we were given a tour through the building, which has many technical measures to reduce the energy consumption. There’s a vertical wind turbine on top of the water toweer, about twenty solar panels on the roof of the office building (not as many as I had expected), a heat pump for building heating and cooling and the drinking water is recycled locally by passing the waste-water past water plants which filter out any pollutants. This water is re-used to flush the toilets. Very interesting to see.

After the general election and the building tour the three sections of ODE each had their own meetings, and the section Bouw (Built Environment) had their meting at our house. This was fun to organise and gave me the opportunity to show our solar panels and the Plugwise monitoring system. Especially the Plugwise system drew much attention. It was also interesting to notice that many people had different opinions about what sustainability is; many people had a technical background but quite a few other people had very different backgrounds. That led to very interesting discussions. I dropped a few people off at the train station with the Zero, allowing me to give several other people their first taste of an electric car. Without exception, all reactions were positive.

When every one had left my wife and I made a tour around Hilversum, through Soest, Baarn and Lage Vuursche. Despite the horrible weather we had great fun, the Zero draws attention everywhere.

All in all a very succesful day.

Second test drive in a Tazzari Zero

Tazzari Zero

On Saturday, October 23rd, the Organisatie voor Duurzame Energie has her yearly general assembly, after which the section built environment will visit our house. Last week I made a  test drive in a Tazzari Zero. Two sentences about two seemingly unrelated things. What do they have to do with each other?

Sometimes storylines come together without any effort at all. MisterGreen, a importer of the Zero, saw that I had test driven this car and offered me to drive one of their models on October 23rd. Unfortunately, this coincided with the ODE general assembly. When I mentioned that to MisterGreen they immediately and generously offered me to take the Zero for the entire day so I could take it so the general assembly.

Of course, that’s a very attractive offer which I happily accepted! So, if you’re an ODE member, you should come to the general assembly anyway (it’s important for the association and also the sustainable office building in Bussum promises to be very interesting) but if yo uwant to see the Zero in real life you should surely attend.

Test drive Tazzari Zero

Tazzari Zero

Translation is in progress

Arno Claasen of The Good Car Company () kindly offered me a test drive in a Tazzari Zero on October 8th, 2010. In this article I’ll describe my experiences during that test drive. We drove on all kinds of roads, from the Amsterdam city centre to secondary roads and the motorway, too. This give me a good impression of the properties of the car under different circumstances.

Can this compact Italian two-seater participate in the upcoming market for electric cars? Read on about my experiences.
